Fibroids Surgery – What Are Your Options?
Are there “real” alternatives to fibroids surgery? I think it is safe to say that you know what uterine fibroids are and the information you are looking for is in regards to figuring out just how to get rid of them with some type of fibroids surgery as a possible consideration. There is much to consider when making a decision to have surgery and a lot of your ultimate choice will depend upon the severity of the fibroids you have.
Note: Today there are alternatives to surgery and we will get to that a little later, towards the end of this article.
Let’s discuss the basics of fibroids surgery here so you can get a better understanding of what is involved. Until recently there has really been three common surgery methods when it comes right down to it but today there are a couple other non-invasive options that you might consider. Each has it’s place and I’m sure your doctor would tell you which one to go with but let’s cover them individually so you have an idea…
Hysterectomy (Every woman’s nightmare)
The hysterectomy, removing part of or all of the uterus, will be the most drastic surgery to remove fibroids permanently. This surgery can be done through the vaginal opening or the abdomin and recovery time will be dependent upon which way you go. It is said that recovery time for a vaginal hysterectomy can be a few weeks but for an abdominal hysterectomy it can take twice as long, maybe up to a couple months. After the hysterectomy, you must try to remain as sedentary as possible and absolutely “no heavy lifting.” You may also be required to eat special foods and take certain vitamin and mineral supplements. Most importantly, a hysterecotomy will surely bring the end of childbearing and it is known to bring on early menopause.
Myomectomy
The myomectomy is surgically similar to a hysterectomy but it is basically for removing those “easy to get to” fibroids. Typically this surgery is done via the abdomin and the uterus wall is recontructed after removal of the fibroids. One advantage over the hysterectomy is that you can continue with childbearing however, you may redevelop fibroids in the future. If this is the case, you will once again have to have surgery. You also need to understand that there is a possibility some fibroids will be missed during the myomectomy and they will continue to grow. The recovery time is commonly around four weeks if done through the abdomin but if done through the vagina you will be looking at just a few hours.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization
Also known as uterine artery embolization, uterine fibroid embolization is so much less invasive and desirable than the hysterectomy and myomectomy. Basically a catheter is placed inside the artery that is supplying the fibroid and blocks off the blood flow. With little to no blood supplying the fibroid, it will shrink in size. Since this is less intensive than the hysterecotomy and myomctomy surgery, the required recovery time is only around a week. Usually only an overnight stay at the hospital is required.
Focused Ultrasound
With focused ultrasound you combine the use of an MRI and ultrasound waves. As individuals, the MRI and ultrasound have been around for a long time and recently they have been combined to help treat fibroids. The 3-dimensional viewing capabilities that come with the MRI give the surgeon a better view of the fibroids and the uterus and the intense ultrasound sound waves can be used with pin-point accuracy to heat up and kill off the fibroids cells. This treatment technique is typically outpatient type and recovery time is a few hours.
Fibroids Surgery As A Last Resort
You should now have an understanding of the various methods of fibroids surgery and what is to be expected with each. The statistics show that 25% of all women between the ages of 30-50 years suffer with fibroids so it is quite common. But don’t think that surgery is the only way to treat uterine fibroids. Surgery should be of a last resort. There are natural techniques and methods that are proven to work and they may just work for you. They are definitely worth a try when you consider the end results of surgery!
